Valves

Fluids and gases do not flow freely in the piping system. They must be regulated and stopped sometimes. There are different types of the valve used in the piping system. The type of the valve that is used depends on their function and conditions. Valves maybe operated manually, either by a lever or operated automatically pneumatic actuator or electrical drive motor.

The following types of valves can be used:

  1. Gate valve
  2. Globe valve
  3. Diaphragm valve
  4. Ball valve
  5. Taper plug valve
  6. Butterfly valve
  7. Check (non-return) valve
  8. Relief valve
  1. Gate valve

The gate valve is for on–off use, due to the disk and seat design. It is not for throttling applications. If gate valve is used for throttling applications, it may damage the disc and seat through erosion or vibration.

  1. Globe valve

The globe valve is a valve that is globe shaped or has globelike features. Globe valve is suitable for throttling applications, and the design of the valve determines the regulation of the flow. The direction of the flow through a globe valve is usually from stem to seat to help the closure of the valve.

There are different types of Globe valve:

Angle globe valve

An angle globe valve changes the direction through 90°.

Needle valve

A needle valve is a small valve used for precise flow control.

Wye valve

Because of its smooth flow pattern, a wye valve is used for erosive fluids.

3. Diaphragm valve

The diaphragm valve consists of a valve body with two or more ports, a diaphragm, and a saddle or seat upon which the diaphragm closes the valve.

There are two main categories of diaphragm valves: one type seals over a saddle (a saddle-type), and the other seals over a seat (a seat-type).

The main difference is that a saddle-type valve has its two ports in line with each other on the opposite sides of the valve, while the seat-type has the in/out ports located at a 90-degree angle from one another.

4. Ball valve

There is a bore in this kind of valve. To block the bore and cut off the flow, a spherical ball is used. The ball that has a hole through the middle is rotated 90° by a lever, then the flow is permitted. Ball valves are not recommended in the throttling applications. They are durable and suitable for high pressures and temperatures.

5. Taper plug valve

Similar to a ball valve, a tapered plug is used to seal the bore of the valve. A hole through the plug is used to permit the flow, when this hole is lined up with the axis of the pipe.

Ball and plug valves are quick and easy to operate. They need a 90° turn of the lever to open or close the valve. When these valves are closed, they put fluid in the ball or plug that creates problems when corrosive fluids are used.

6. Butterfly valve

A butterfly valve has a circular disc that is the size of the pipe bore in diameter. This disc rotates around its center, so that when it is closed, the disc completely covers and seals the bore of the pipe.

When it is fully open, the disc thickness lies along the center of the pipe. The contents of the pipe then pass down and pass both sides of the disc.

The butterfly valve is lower in cost to the other valves and is lighter in weight.

7. Check (non-return) valve

Check valve is a mechanical valve that permits the fluid (liquid or gas) to flow through it only in one direction. The valve is closed when the flow is reversed.

The check valve operates the cracking pressure (or opening pressure) that is the minimum upstream pressure.

8. Relief valve

Relief valves are used to prevent high pressure of gas or liquid in lines or vessels.  Relief valves permit a large flow for gases, and a small flow for liquids.
